Before Doom Eternal launched last year, there was an understanding that paid cosmetic DLC would not be a part of the game. That seems to have changed quickly, however, as there are two new packs that can be purchased right now.

The new packs are very different from one another. The Series One Cosmetic Pack includes nameplates, weapon skins, icons, etc., all of which appear to fit perfectly within the hellish universe of Doom. Meanwhile, the Doomicorn Master Collection Cosmetic Pack can be described as “pretty” and includes items that were previously Twitch Prime exclusives for Doom Eternal.

Currently, both packs have negative reviews from users on Steam, but this is partially because the DLC is currently glitched. Those who purchase the Series One pack are receiving the Doomicorn content, and vice versa. Other fans are confused and unhappy because the game’s creative director Hugo Martin once said that the game would not have a store for purchases as if it were a free-to-play game.

Developer id Software once gave fans the ability to unlock a Doom Eternal skin before the game even released, which is a very consumer-friendly idea. These two new packs being of the microtransaction category are quite different than that.

However, many would argue that cosmetic packs are not worth complaining about. The skins, animations, etc. do not change the gameplay in any way and will not give a competitive advantage. The only thing that may feel a little discomforting is the idea that at one point fans were under the assumption that these types of DLC would not be a part of the game.

Doom Eternal is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
